Net amount AED 1,000.00
VAT (5%) AED 50.00
Gross total AED 1,050.00

Figures are indicative and for guidance only. The UAE standard VAT rate is 5%. Confirm the correct treatment for your supplies with a tax adviser or the Federal Tax Authority.

The formula
Adding VAT: net × 1.05
Removing VAT: gross ÷ 1.05

To add 5% VAT, multiply the net figure by 1.05, the extra 5% is the tax. To work backwards from a VAT-inclusive price, divide by 1.05 to recover the net, then the difference is the VAT you've already paid.

Registration thresholds
Mandatory at AED 375,000
Voluntary from AED 187,500

Once your taxable supplies pass AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, VAT registration with the FTA is mandatory. Below that, you can register voluntarily from AED 187,500.

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?+

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, applied to most goods and services. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%), such as certain exports, international transport and specific healthcare and education, while others are exempt, including some financial services and residential property.

How do I calculate 5% VAT in the UAE?+

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by 0.05 and add it to the net, for example AED 1,000 × 0.05 = AED 50 VAT, giving a gross of AED 1,050. To remove VAT from a gross amount, divide by 1.05 to get the net, then subtract the net from the gross to find the VAT portion.

When must a UAE business register for VAT?+

Registration is mandatory once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 in the previous 12 months. Voluntary registration is available from AED 187,500. Once registered, businesses charge 5% VAT on taxable supplies and file returns with the Federal Tax Authority.

Do I charge VAT when invoicing clients outside the UAE?+

Exports of goods and services to customers outside the UAE, whether businesses or private individuals, are generally zero-rated at 0%, provided the conditions in the VAT law are met, so no 5% is added. Supplies to customers inside the UAE are normally standard-rated at 5%. Place-of-supply rules and exceptions apply, so confirm the treatment for each case.
